Effective June 1, 2008, NY Waterway will be implementing a most urgently needed Fuel Surcharge Policy. Fare increases will be predicated as closely as possible with our revised fuel costs, precise length of route and average fuel consumption. Increases will be posted in all terminals or can be found by going to www.nywaterway.com.
As you are aware, the cost of fuel has skyrocketed since the beginning of the year. Our per gallon fuel cost has risen from an average of $2.5702 a gallon for January, 2008 to an average of $3.3452 for April, 2008, an increase of over $.77 a gallon. Our average monthly fuel usage is 345,000 gallons; based on this, you can quickly see that our costs for the month of April alone have increased by $266,000. Our costs in May 2008 thus far have increased more wildly, and in the hope that they may soon abate, we are trying to base our fare changes on our April 2008 costs.
As a result of the size of this increase and the projection of possible future increases, we must institute this Fuel Surcharge Policy. We will be using the $3.3452 per gallon cost as the base for the surcharge; on a quarterly basis which will determine the average cost per gallon increase or decrease. If our average cost falls below or above the standard ($3.3452) by more than 10%, we will adjust our ticket price accordingly.

We regret having to do this, however, we have taken every action available to us to reduce costs. Unfortunately, we have reached a point where we have no other alternative. Our fuel costs could determine our very survival!
